Winter can be a very dreary time of the year. After the excitement of Christmas has passed, there’s not much to look forward until the arrival of the Spring sunshine. Although you may not feel like it, the best way to cure the winter blues is to get out and enjoy some activities and experiences with friends and family. Here are our pick of the best Winter activities in Dundrum & the surrounding area.

Ice Skating

Don’t let the magic and wonder of Christmas end on 25th. Ice skating in Dundrum South is open across the season from 25th October until 12the January giving you plenty of time to enjoy a spin on the ice. Ice skating is something that can be found easily in many European cities but in Dublin, it’s strictly a Winter sport so we take full advantage. It’s such a fun day out for friends, family and couples alike, and everyone can take their time and skate to their own abilities. You just might be the next Torvill & Dean in the making! Best of all it’s only 5-minutes’s drive from IMI residence.

One of the best things about Winter is the excuse to go shopping. Dundrum Town Centre has over 160 shops and outlets, so you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for and some bargains along the way. There are a good mixture of high end stores like BT2 and Hugo Boss and high street favourites like Zara & River Island, not forgetting everyone’s favourite, Penneys (Primark)! Most stores in Dundrum have fantastic January sales too, a perfect excuse for some retail therapy.

Winter may feel like the perfect time to stay indoors and hibernate but if you want to explore the area and stay active, there are some brilliant hikes and walks dotted around Dundrum. Make sure to wrap up warm, pack some lunch and head out into the great outdoors. Make your way out to the three rock trail for a moderately challenging hike with spectacular views of Dublin Bay & the Wicklow Mountains. If you’d prefer a more leisurely walk, head to Markey Park, an expansive 86 hectare park just 10 minutes’ drive from IMI Residence.

Rainforest Adventure Golf

If you’d love to spend some time exercising and enjoying yourself but can’t face the wind and rain that is guaranteed with an Irish Winter, the next best thing is a trip to Rainforest Adventure Golf. The 16,000 sq ft, high tech, state-of-the-art, indoor mini-golf centre is close to Dundrum Town Centre and is great fun for old and young. You can enjoy a round of 18 hole golf on their Aztec and Mayan themed courses, enjoying the impressive surroundings and decor. If you finish early, take advantage of their mini-arcade or treat yourself to some tasty food in the Canopy Café.

Climbing wall

To stay active but out of the rain, you could also try bouldering in The Wall Climbing Gym in Sandyford. It’s a great activity for active adults or a great bonding experience for families with children. They have 11 circuits catering for beginners, intermediate, and advanced climbers so no need to worry if you’ve never tried it before. Alongside the training areas, they also have weights, campus, fingerboards and their own Stokt training board. It’s a very reasonable €11.50 per adult for a session and you can also book in for group or private training courses to work on your techniques.
