It may feel like summer was just a couple of weeks ago (especially with the unseasonable warmth this year) but our favourite time of the year is fast approaching. If you feel it’s too soon, look away now but we are truly excited for Christmas in Dublin! The city turns into a winter wonderland with something for everyone, even the Grinches among us. Here are our personal highlights to enjoying the festive season in Dublin's fair city.

Dublin is one of the fashion and shopping capitals of Ireland and a quick walk down Grafton Street will confirm this. Over Christmas, all shop fronts in the city are adorned with beautiful festive lights and decorations to encourage shoppers to start their shopping early. We are home to huge international brands like Kurt Geiger, Gucci and Ted Baker as well as more accessible high-street shops such as River Island and Cath Kidston. There is something for everyone and every budget.

Christmas Markets

Speaking of shopping, this year sees the return of the fantastic Christmas craft markets and we are so excited! It is great having so many shops and outlets here but there is something extra special about searching through market stalls and finding that perfect unique gift for someone special. The main market usually takes place in Dublin’s historical CHQ building and not only does it have a great selection of Christmas gift ideas and decorations but there are also carol singers, food stalls and mulled wine to be enjoyed. There are a variety of Christmas craft and flea markets around the city to choose from so you won’t be bored!

Ice Skating

Is there anything more festive than watching your friends and family struggle to stay upright while balancing on ice skates? Ok, maybe there is but we think it's fantastic festive fun! Each year, Dundrum Town Centre hosts a huge ice rink that brings hours of enjoyment to skaters of all ages and skill levels. This year the rink opens late October and continues into the New Year and they have some great value deals on tickets online.

Carols Xmas Eve

Every year after the shops close for the holidays, Ireland's best and brightest stars come out for a charity busking session on Grafton Street. They brave the cold and elements to raise money for their nominated charity and the Christmas atmosphere is like no other. You may even be lucky enough to see huge celebs taking part like Hozier, Glen Hansard and the one and only Bono!

Dublin has a great variety of Pantos each year, usually based on our favourite fairy tales and given a modern and often cheeky twist. Pantos are great for children and they often have a few adult jokes thrown in that go way over their heads! You can check out your options in The Gaiety Theatre, The Helix, The Olympia or any local theatres. Pantos are a great Christmas tradition to start with your children that is an enjoyable treat for everyone during the Christmas season.

If you are looking for accommodation for your Christmas break, the IMI Residence in Dundrum is ideal. We offer comfort, convenience and great value rates. Book direct for special offers not available anywhere else.
